Job description

We are seeking a Solicitor to join our premier Band 1 Corporate team in Brisbane.

In this role you will work closely with Partner Melissa Swain-Tonkin and other leading Partners across our Brisbane and interstate corporate group.

Melissa specialises in public and private mergers and acquisitions for predominantly offshore clients, as well as related contractual, corporate governance and foreign investment and regulatory matters. Melissa’s practice focusses on advising financial investors (including private equity firms and Japanese trading houses) on their Australian investments. Her focus industries are energy and resources and infrastructure (including new energy opportunities) and her team has a particular focus on the Japan-Australia investment corridor.

Your day could typically involve:

  • Being involved in all aspects of corporate transactions including public and private M&A deals and takeovers for listed companies, disposals, private equity transactions and joint ventures, predominantly in the energy, resources and infrastructure sectors.

  • Drafting and negotiating key transactions documents, providing advice on areas of legal risk for clients and managing external client relationships.

  • Ensuring key deadlines are met, including working closely with other legal teams across the firm to deliver an integrated service to our clients as well as working closely with other advisers on transactions.

  • Managing and building external client relationships, including assisting with business development activities for key existing clients and potential new clients.

  • Mentoring team members and assisting with providing training both in the team and across the firm.

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • an unrestricted Australian practicing certificate, with 3+ years' private practice or similar experience. We would also consider applicants with more or less experience and overseas qualified applicants;

  • in-depth experience in M&A (with a focus on private M&A) and strong contract drafting skills;

  • an excellent academic record, and a high level of attention to detail;

  • a proactive approach and desire to be an integral member of, and contributor to, our leading and supportive team;

  • an ability to work to tight timeframes, collaboratively and at times autonomously;

  • a curiosity about clients, and corporate and commercial law and transactions, and the desire to continue to learn;

  • an eagerness to create an exceptional experience for our clients and value empathy, simplicity and commerciality in so doing.
